Ula Deru Simić

Promoting democracy and accessibility of art

Belgian | Serbian

Ula Deru is a visual designer and curator. Driven by digital practices and their relationship to spatial and visual cultures, she prompts conversation between the virtual and physical with an emphasis on diplomacy and multiculturality in the arts.

She studied at the College of Arts and Design Brussels, doing a BA in Interior Architecture and Product Design. While being passionate about spatial and digital design, her interest moved towards understanding the arts through philosophical thoughts and geopolitical contexts. She moved to London to start her studies at Goldsmiths University of London by doing a Postgraduate Diploma in Contemporary Art History. Her desire to combine spatial creation and art history led her to pursue an MA in Culture, Criticism and Curation at Central Saint Martins University of Arts London.

Throughout her academic journey in contemporary art and curation, she developed strong critical and curatorial skills, deepening her understanding of artistic practices—from activism and digital art to decolonial narratives. The core idea of curation, coming from Latin "curare", has stuck with her and her practice. Her professional and independent projects span spatial creation and gallery management in Brussels and London. She's especially interested in founding inclusive platforms that promote emerging and underrepresented artists. She is particularly specialised in curating work by these artists in exceptional, often abandoned, architectural spaces.

Her ongoing theoretical research is in the realm of the instrumentalisation of contemporary art in war areas and the reality of art communities in unstable regimes.
